2006 Census: Best way to providing statistical basis- Liman

By Adako Aselema.

The Federal Commissioner in charge of Nasarawa State National Population Commission (NPC) Alhaji Muhammadu Liman, has described the Census 2006 Post Enumeration Survey as the best way to provide statistical basis for measuring the level of accuracy of the census conducted in March 2006.

Alhaji Liman who stated so at a press briefing a Lafia, last week, said the objective of the Post Enumeration to Survey (PES) was to collect additional information on fertility and mortality.

He said that the PES was meant to identify procedural and conceptual improvements needed for future censuses, adding that no community will suffer any disadvantage on account of not being included in the PES.

In an interview with the United Nation Population Fund (UNPF) country technical service leader Dr. Boubacar Sow said the team was satisfied with the level of performance of enumerators in Nasarawa State.

He however called on them (enumerators) to ensure that they covered the Enumeration Areas (EAs) mapped out for them effectively.

On his part, the director in charge of NPC Lafia, Mr Bulus Ukevem, appealed to residents to support the PES exercise, adding that five percent of people in every local government council and development area would be counted.

He said that the exercise was part of the 2006 census conducted in March this year.

Also speaking, the Nasarawa State focal officer of UNDP, Alhaji Maiwada Idris, gave an assurance that there would be no problem in the payment of the enumerators and other NPC PES functionaries in the state this time around.

He announced that arrangements for their payment have been completed and the payment exercise would start on 28 or 29 of June when the PES exercise was over.
