By Titus Mangut & Anthony Azdagedi
Six hundred bags of fertilizer have been distributed to registered farmers in Nasarawa State on loan basis by three Non-Government Organisations; Oxfam Great Britain, Agape Project and Young men Christian Association (Y.M.C.A) to supplement government efforts at boosting food production in the state.
Executive Secretary, Young Men Christian Association, Mr. Edward Anzaku, disclosed this while speaking to Nigerian Newsday in Lafia.
He said the disbursement of the fertilizer had become necessary as some farmers could not afford to purchase the commodity in the market.
Mr. Anzaku said if the farmers properly made use of the fertilizer, it will help them to improve their yields.
The executive secretary said his organization was embarking on an awareness campaign to sensitize the farmers on the need to have a say in determining the price of what they produced.
According to him, Y.M.C.A has registered about 1,450 farmers in the state and gave an assurance that all those that were registered will benefit from the loans, one after the other.
Mr. Anzaku, who observed that most of rural areas have good access road to transport their produce to the market, however announced that his NGO was engaged in road construction and rehabilitation in the state in order to ease transportation problems facing rural farmers in the state.
