Zamfara earmarks N1.76bn for boreholes

As part of its measures to put to rest the lingering water shortage in Gusau the capital city of Zamfara, Zamfara State Government through its ministry of water resources has awarded a contract worth over N1.76 billion for the drilling of 50 boreholes this fiscal year.

This was announced by the state commissioner of water resources, Alhaji Aliyu Adamu Tsafe while briefing newsmen in his office penultimate week.

According to the commissioner, the contract was given to the CGC Nig Ltd adding that, the first phase of the project will soon be completed by the company.

He however noted that the sum of N54 million has been expended for the construction of three additional boreholes to enhance water supply in some areas which include Gida Dari, Gada Baga Housing estate, and Gangoron kwata.

Alhaji Tsafe also stated that the sum of N88, 530 million has been set aside for the rehabilitation and repairs of all hand pumps within the state capital as well as refurbishing and clearing of the four main water tanks in Gusau including the underground tank at the state water board.

On the state wide water supply the commissioner hinted that the state government has earmarked about one billion naira for the resuscitation of both urban and semi-urban water schemes across the state. He then appealed to the general public in the state to give every support to the state government in its effort to overcome water shortage and to cultivate the habit of protecting all water supply facilities provided for them as well as report any damage of the facilities for quick action by the state government.
