The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, (NSUK), has commended the Nasarawa State legislature for ensuring the adequate funding of the state university.
Chairman of the NSUK chapter of ASUU, Alhaji Yahaya Abdullahi, made the commendation during a courtesy visit to the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Musa Mohammed Ahmed.
Alhaji Abdullahi said that if the welfare package proposed by ASUU was given approval by the authorities concerned, it would go a long way in motivating the lecturers to put in their best.
He disclosed that ASUU was presently negotiating with the Federal Government on how best to fund the country’s universities.
The ASUU chairman stated that one of the reasons that prompted the visit of the ASUU members to the speaker was to commend the lawmakers for passing laws that have impacted positively on the lives of the people.
Receiving the ASUU members, the speaker, Alhaji Musa Mohammed Ahmed, thanked the visitors for appreciating the modest efforts of the House in making laws for the good governance of the state.
The speaker assured that the issues elaborated by the ASUU chairman would be looked into with a view to solving them.
He told the ASUU members that the annual budgetary allocation to the state university has been increased to over N1 billion this year from the previous N45 million.
He said the increase in the budgetary allocation to the institution was aimed at boosting the standard of education in the state.
The speaker assured the ASUU members that in his capacity as the chairman of the House committee on budget implementation, he would ensure that the budgetary allocation to the state university was implemented to the latter.
