Construction Of Doma - Akwatta - Agbashi - Benue Border Road
Thursday, April 03, 2008

SPEECH OF HIS EXCELLENCY, ALHAJI ALIYU AKWE DOMA, OON (GARKUWAN DOMA), EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF NASARAWA STATE, ON THE OCCASION OF THE FLAG-OFF CEREMONY OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF DOMA - AKWATTA - AGBASHI - BENUE BORDER ROAD. 3RD APRIL, 2008

PROTOCOL:

I feel deeply fulfilled and grateful to God the Almighty as I join you on this historic occasion of the flag-off for the construction of Doma - Akwatta Road being the first phase of the Doma - Akwatta - Agbashi - Benue border Road project.

2. As you are all aware this contract was awarded by the Nasarawa State Government to Messrs PW Nig. Ltd. at a total cost of Three Billion, Seven Hundred and Sixty-six Million, Two Hundred and Sixteen Thousand, Three Hundred and Seventy-four Naira (N3,766,216,374.00), with a completion period of 18 months.

3. You will all recall that in the course of our electioneering campaigns, we pledged to the people of the State to provide infrastructural facilities with a view to opening up all parts of the State to opportunities for rapid socio-economic development. We did promise to give special attention to our rural areas where the bulk of our people reside.

4. It is, therefore, in furtherance to our commitment to ensuring overall development of the State that we evolved a 13-point development agenda, which we unfolded on assumption of office in May, 2007. We stressed that road development is a major and urgent priority because of the need to open up the State and facilitate the movement of goods and services for the rapid socio-economic development.

5. It is in this connection that Government awarded contracts for the construction of six major roads across the State.

6. Let me make it clear that the construction/rehabilitation of these six roads is only but the first phase of our programme of massive construction of road network in the State. I want to assure you all that besides these roads, more shall be constructed in due course and in different parts of the State.

7. Ladies and gentlemen, we are here today to begin the first in the series of the flag-off ceremonies. The next few days will witness similar exercises in other parts of the State.

8. I believe that today is a special day for all the communities in this part of Nasarawa State. The construction of the road we have all yearned for has now begun in earnest. This is, no doubt, a dream come true.

9. Perhaps, I should point out that this road project is in recognition of the abundant agricultural potentials, as well as the hard work, resilience and patience of the people of this area. As one of the largest contributors to agricultural and livestock production in the State, the provision of this road should, therefore, place greater challenges on you to double up your productivity because of the investment opportunities it will attract to the area.

10. At this juncture, let me commend Messrs PW Nig. Ltd., the contractors handling the project for quickly mobilizing to site soon after the signing of the contract award. This is a welcome indication of the Company’s preparedness to keep to its contractual obligations. I urge you to sustain this positive approach so that this project can be completed according to standard and within schedule. I trust that you will enjoy the cooperation of the benefiting communities in the course of your work.

11. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let me take this opportunity to once again, express the appreciation of this Administration to the people of the State for your solidarity and massive support.

12. On our part, we shall continue to maintain the tempo of performance in the determined efforts to uplift the standard and quality of life of the people.

13. In conclusion, I must not forget to warmly thank our friends and well wishers, who have come from far and near to rejoice with us on this memorable occasion. May the spirit of this solidarity and cooperation be a permanent feature of our relationships.

14. Ladies and gentlemen, it is now my pleasure to flag-off the construction of Doma - Akwatta Road the first phase of Doma - Akwatta - Agbashi - Benue border Road project.

15. Thank you and God bless.
