Thursday, November 17, 2005
It was a glorious day for the people of Nasarawa state on Wednesday this week when a member of the British House of Lords visited the state. Baroness Howells was the first British peer to visit the state and it was the only state she would visit during her current tour of Nigeria.
Arriving in Lafia, the capital city of Nasarawa in the warm afternoon sun, Baroness Howells was treated to the warm hospitality of the government and people of Nasarawa state. Welcome her to the state, governor Abdullahi Adamu extolled the virtues of Baroness Howells in her determined efforts at racial and gender equality. He said his interaction with Baroness Howells had thus far been very satisfying as she has carried her work with zeal and consistent focus. He thanked Baroness Howells for spearing time to visit Nasarawa state.
In her response, Baroness Howells said she was very delighted to be among those she considered as family. She said she was very convinced of her African ancestry and so was quite delighted to see the real African setting during this tour. She invited those citizens of Nasarawa state who will be opportune to be in the UK to always feel free to call the House of Lords to book an appointment to see her.
Baroness Howells who is being accompanied on the tour by her daughter were treated to a gala night by the state government.
