Nasarawa Hosts Fish Summit Delegates to a Gala Night
Saturday, August 27, 2005
Delegates from all over the world who are attending the NEPAD Fish for All Summit in Nigeria's capital of Abuja have been treated to the rich culture and hospitality of the people of Nasarawa State. The occasion was a gala night sponsored by the government of Nasarawa state at the Le Meridian hotel Abuja last night.
At the gala night, delegates were thrilled by the artistry of the performance of the state cultural troupe. And in a speech at the occasion, Governor Adamu said that the Fish for all summit is a new African initiative aimed at achieving sustainable food production and agricultural development, lamenting that although hundreds of thousands of families in the riverine areas of Nigeria fish for a living, fish farming is relatively in its infancy in our country. The summit, the Governor said, opens a new national chapter in the diversification of our investments in agricultural production and development. I am confident that if we sustain this initiative, the fish farmer will enjoy the same social recognition as the chicken farmer in Nigeria. Nigeria would be better for it.
Nasarawa State according to Governor Adamu, five abandoned fish farms were inherited. Continuing, he said "we have renovated and expanded them for increased fish production. We have encouraged private initiatives in fish farming because the fate of this initiative is in the hands of the people. The response from our people has been most encouraging. Today, private individuals in the state are proud owners of sixty small-scale fish farms".
In attendance at the gala night were federal ministers, national assembly members, politicians and top officials of the Nasarawa state government.
