In Ghana, Governor Adamu Receives Standing Ovation
Tuesday, August 16, 2005

The famous La Palm Royal Hotel at the center of Accra Ghana was the full of life at the weekend as Governor Adamu delivered what was probably his best foreign policy speech of all time. Titled "The Search for a UN Security Council Permanent Seat - A Case for Nigeria" the speech was so lucidly written and delivered that the whole venue rose to a prolonged standing ovation at the end of the delivery.

The occasion was the formal presentation of a book titled "Obasanjo and the Face of Nigeria's Foreign Policy". The author - Abdulmumin Jibrin - had requested Governor Adamu to deliver an address on Nigeria's quest for the United Nations Permanent seat. In the cause of the speech, Governor Adamu held the audience spell bound and was only punctuated by loud applause of agreement with what Governor Adamu was saying.

The speech which chronicled Nigeria's contributions to peace in Africa and around the world made a strong case, based on Nigeria's antecedents, for the country's qualification to the UN seat. According to Governor Adamu, Nigeria seeks the seat as a matter of duty to Africans and the black race because it is the most populous black nation in the world. The country has paid its due to the UN at all times and has been at the forefront of world peace. Beyond that, accord to Governor Adamu, the history of Nigeria is the history of a people committed to what they consider to be the best for Africa and the black race. All African nations have benefited from this disposition of Nigeria. On the basis of a multiplicity of factors therefore, and on the probability of factors, Nigeria stands a position, more than any other nation, to clinch the seat.

In attendance at the ceremony where the Vice President of Ghana - Aliu Mahama, Governor of Rivers State - Peter Odili, Deputy Speaker House of Representatives - Austin Opara and a host of high ranking Ghanaian and Nigerian officials.
