Nasarawa/Plateau States Sign Joint Border Agreement

A joint border agreement has been signed by the Nasarawa and Plateau State Governments. The agreement, which serves to delineate the common border between the two states, was signed after a series of meetings and consultations between the two states and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.
Signing the document in Abuja, Governor Adamu stated that Nasarawa state was acceding to the agreement in order to restore harmony and unity amongst the people of the areas affected. Governor Adamu noted that the people were from the same linguistic group and have been living in harmony for a long time. He said the border were just for administrative convenience and was not meant to separate the people. In like manner, the Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Chief Bot-Mang stated that they were ready to abide by the agreement so that everybody will be comfortable.![[Image]](../images/02/Dcp_0844.jpg)
Officials of various Federal establishments who witnessed the signing ceremony described the meetings as the most peaceful they have ever witnessed in the country. They said they cordiality that attended the meetings have never been witnessed in the history of dispute resolutions in the country and commended both governments for the maturity with which they handled the discussions.
The joint border between the two states run from Lafia East Local Government to Farin-Ruwa Local Government. Below is the full text of the Communiqué.
COMMUNIQUE
A meeting of the Joint Consultative Committee on Nasarawa – Plateau interstate boundary was held in Abuja on 29 th July 2002 to discuss the interstate boundary dispute between the two states. The Hon. Minister of State for Works & Housing, Chairman of the Joint Consultative Committee, Chief Garba Madaki Ali, was represented by Alh. U. M. Abubakar, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Housing, who also presided over the meeting. The Nasarawa State delegation was led by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, while the Plateau State delegation was led by the Deputy Governor, Chief Michael Bot Mang on behalf of His Excellency, the Executive Governor, Chief Joshua Dariye. Also in attendance were Prof. A. E. Ekoko, Commissioner Internal Boundaries, National Boundary Commission and Acting Surveyor-General of the Federation, Surveyor I. A. A. Adewola.
2. Resolutions
After exhaustive deliberations, the meeting resolved as follows:
That the meeting accepts the boundary between Nasarawa and Plateau states as described in the National Boundaries Commission Memo No. JCC/2001/NS/PL/2 of 29th July, 2002;
That the accepted boundary description be used to demarcate and survey the entire length of Nasarawa/Plateau interstate boundary by the National Boundary Commission and the Federal Surveys in conjunction with the two states;
That the two states, the border local government councils and affected communities shall continue to live in peace with each other.
