NEPAD Programme Launched in Nasarawa State

"In Nasarawa State, Government has fully embraced the NEPAD Framework and provided the necessary mechanism for the development of the Nasarawa Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NASEEDS) in order to launch the State on the right track towards achieving development." Governor Adamu stated this at the occasion of the Official Launching of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Framework in Lafia.

The NEPAD office at the state level is intended to facilitate development through the implementation of programmes/ projects by designated institutions and agencies at the State and Local Government levels. The NEPAD office would need to work in close collaboration with government officials, civil society groups, youth organizations, labour unions international development partners as well as the State SEEDS implementation teams and this it will do through the coordinator. The State Office will also be expected to collaborate with the Local Government and Development Areas to facilitate the effective implementation of the NEPAD/NASEEDS process in the state.

Also present at the launch was the Senior Special Assistant to the President on NEPAD, Chief (Dr.) Mrs. Chinyere Ukpabi Asika, who described NEPAD as “a programme to bring Africa out of the quagmire of poverty.” She also stated, “that Africa will develop through her own resources and through the resourcefulness of its people” and “we are not saying UN should come and develop us; they should come and partner with us.” Mrs. Asika also said that the year 2005 has been declared the year of Africa.
