Nasarawa State University Holds First Convocation Ceremony
Sunday, February 19, 2006

The ancient city of Keffi went agog this Saturday when the state university held its first convocation ceremony in honour of it first graduating class.

In attendance at the colourful ceremony was the top echelon of the Nigerian political class led by no other than the number one citizen of Nigeria, President Olusegun Obasanjo. Also in attendance were the chief justice of Nigeria, three executive governors, many deputy governors as well as senators, House of Representatives members and parliamentarians from across the country.

The ceremony which dwarfed many ceremonies that have been held in Nasarawa state for many years, saw the award of honourary doctorate degrees to six distinguished Nigerians. They were the Emir of Keffi – Mohammed Chindo Yamusa; the governor of Rivers state – Peter Odili; governor of Ondo state – Olusegun Agagu; governor of Kebbi State – Mohammed Aleiro; former defence minister – Theophilus Danjuma and distinguished banker – Cecilia Ibru.

In an address at the ceremony, President Obasanjo said education was the bedrock of any society and the basis for self-actualisation. The President challenged the university to ensure that the courses of the university reflect national needs so that the students may be empowered to be relevant to modern Nigeria. He also challenged the students to find other ways of employment instead of looking towards government alone.

In his address to the convocation, Governor Adamu said he was particularly happy that the university was growing in leaps and bounds. He commended all those who contributed to the growth of the university.

A total of 320 students graduated from various faculties during the ceremony.
