The Federal Government has approved the immediate establishment of one of the Six newly established federal Universities in Nasarawa State. The good news was broken to an elated state executive council during a visit to the State by the Minister of Education, Professor Rukayitu Rufai.

Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma who led the Council and senior Government officials to received the news stated that the news was a fulfilment of the yearns, hopes and aspirations of the people of Nasarawa State for self determination and self actualisation.

Governor Doma said the citing of a federal university was something the people have long prayed for and the answer came on a day of history which the people of Nasarawa State will forever live to remember.

The Governor expressed the gratitude of the government and people of the people of Nasarawa State to the Federal Government particularly President Goodluck Jonathan whose personal interest in the State actualised the proposal. He assured the federal government that Nasarawa State will leave no stone unturned in collaborating and cooperating for the smooth take-off of the University.

As an expression of the support of the Nasarawa State Government to the take-off of the University, Governor Doma donated the entire buildings and facilities of the present College of Agriculture, Lafia as well as adjorning lands, to the University.

Speaking earlier, the Minister stated that the establishment of additional federal universities was part of government’s efforts to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria.

She said the Ministry had developed a one year strategy to improve access to education for the youths of Nigeria who are presently shut out of tertiary education. In this regard, more universities would be established.

The Governor and the Minister took time during the visit to pay a courtesy call on the Emir of Lafia as well as inspect facilities at the proposed site of the University.
