The Lafia township stadium was agog this weekend as celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence took place.

The celebrations which also coincided with the 14th anniversary of the creation of Nasarawa State included a colourful parade mounted by detachments of the Army, Police and Para-Military organisations.

In an address at the occasion, Governor Doma paid glowing tribute to the founding fathers of Nigeria for the foundation they laid for a greater and united Nigeria.

He also used the occasion to congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan on the golden jubilee of Nigeria’s independence.

Turning to the celebration of the creation of Nasarawa State, Governor Doma used the occasion to express sincere appreciation to the people of the State for their collective support, steadfastness and solidarity, a situation he said was as gratifying, as it is encouraging.

Governor Doma said that by hard work, commitment, focus and the people’s support, the impact of the policies, programmes and activities of his Administration are being felt in all facets of development and in all the nooks and corners of the State.

He therefore urged the people of Nasarawa State to continue to show unanimity of purpose to quickly move the State to greater heights, “so that we can occupy our rightful place in the scheme of things, in the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The occasion was also an opportunity for Governor Doma to urge the people to fully mobilise and actively participate in this all important civic duty.

Turning to the forthcoming 2011 elections, Governor Doma stressed the need for all citizens of Nasarawa State to ensure peaceful conduct, before, during and after the general elections. He also urged them to eschew rancour, bitterness and other forms of vices and negative tendencies during the period.

The occasion was attended by major stakeholders in the State.
