Being Text of an Address by His Excellency, Alhaji (Dr.) Aliyu Akwe Doma, OON (Madauchin Doma) Executive Governor of Nasarawa State on the Occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Nigeria's Independence and 14th Anniversary of the Creation of Nasarawa State, Township Stadium, Lafia, 1st October, 2010.
It is with a sense of fulfilment and gratitude to Almighty Allah that I address you today on this historic occasion of the 50th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria and the 14th Anniversary of the creation of Nasarawa State.
Let me join all Nigerians in acknowledging with gratitude the selfless contributions of the founding fathers of the nation, particularly for the foundation they laid for a greater and united Nigeria.
In the same vein, I congratulate His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on this golden jubilee of our nation's independence. May the Almighty God continue to protect our President and grant him good health, grace and wisdom in transforming our country into a prosperous and more united entity.
My dear people of Nasarawa State, it is gratifying to observe such a galaxy of personalities at this occasion. I am not surprised. Yes, I am not surprised because this happy development underscores the significance of the twin celebration of our national day and the 14th anniversary of the creation of our State. It is my hope that this spirit of partnership, support and unanimity of purpose will continue to be a typical feature of our State in our journey to the Promised Land.
Fellow compatriots, let me use this opportunity to once again express sincere appreciation to you all for your collective support, steadfastness and solidarity with this Administration. Your continuous commitment to our efforts to realise the ideals of the founding fathers of the State, is as gratifying, as it is encouraging.
My dear brothers and sisters, as you are all aware, on assumption of office in 2007, we formulated a 13-Point Agenda which became the guiding philosophy of our Administration. The Agenda, which sums up the vision and mission of my Administration, is designed to address, among other things, the critical issues of peace, progress and development.
I am glad to state that by hard work, commitment, focus and your support, the impact of our policies, programmes and activities are being felt in all facets of development and in all the nooks and corners of the State.
However, we must not forget that the challenges ahead of us are still enormous. There are still many hurdles, valleys and mountains to cross in our journey to greatness. I, therefore, trust that I can continue to count on you in our development efforts, and in our collective resolve to quickly move Nasarawa State to greater heights, so that we can occupy our rightful place in the scheme of things, in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Ladies and gentlemen, at this juncture, I want to draw attention to the forthcoming Voters Registration Exercise. This is an important civic responsibility which all qualified citizens should participate. We must, therefore, fully mobilise and actively participate in this all important duty. I urge all and sundry, from the age of 18 and above, to ensure that he or she is properly registered. It is the only way by which you can vote, or be voted for.
Let me also use this opportunity to stress the need for all citizens of Nasarawa State to ensure peaceful conduct, before, during and after the 2011 general elections. I urge you all to eschew rancour, bitterness and other forms of vices and negative tendencies.
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to conclude this address by expressing gratitude to our traditional rulers, community and religious leaders, youth and women groups, as well as, non-governmental organisations for your individual and collective contributions, support and understanding in our efforts to better the lives of our people, and in our determination to move Nasarawa State forward.
I congratulate you all and wish you happy celebration of Nigeria's Golden Jubilee and 14th anniversary of the creation of Nasarawa State.
Thank you and God bless.
