Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma has said that the people of Nasarawa State would give their support to President Goodluck Jonathan should he decide to contest the 2011 presidential election.

The Governor made this pledge when he led a 30- man delegation to the State House in Abuja, said “no presidential aspirant inspires the state with confidence like President Jonathan” adding that the president possessed what it takes to take the country to the promised land.

The governor said that they were at the state House “to reaffirm our unflinching loyalty, solidarity and partnership to you and your administration. We assure you of our continuous support and understanding in the discharge of your responsibility as president”.

“Mr. President, we wish to state that should you decide to answer the clarion call on you from different parts of the country to contest the 2011 presidential election, we, the people of Nasarawa State, are resolved to give you our total support and commitment”, he said.

Governor Doma requested the president to extend the dualisation of the Abuja- Keffi road to Akwanga, Lafia,  Makurdi and Enugu.

Said the governor: “This stretch of national highway, which serves as a strategic link between the South-Eastern part of the country and the North, has been a disturbing death trap over the years.  We believe that its timely dualisation would not only save lives and property, but would accelerate the development of the national economy”.

The governor who commended president Jonathan for doing well in his 100 days in office, especially in the areas of electoral reforms, energy and power, police reform, Niger Delta and the rule of law among many, expressed his confidence that  with him as president, Nigeria would be moved beyond its present point.

Conveying the state’s position to State House correspondents after the visit last week, Governor Doma said that as far as his people were concerned, the best person to rule this country for now was Jonathan, who, he added, has demonstrated national commitment, patriotic  ability and focus  in the discharge of his presidential responsibilities.

He said that the visit was to show solidarity to the president for having taken the country this far and for what he was doing to take the country to greater heights.

On his part, the President reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that every vote counts in next year’s general elections, saying that he would make no compromises on that commitment.

“We will not shift an inch away from it. Public office holders must truly enter office with the mandate of the people. If votes do not count, then public office holders cannot be compelled to do the right thing. Ensuring that all votes count is therefore the best way of ensuring that our democracy stabilizes and our people reap its positive dividends,” President Jonathan told the delegation.

He affirmed his Administration’s commitment to accelerating the pace of national economic development, boosting power supply, and providing essential infrastructure in all parts of the country.

On the specific request by the delegation that the dualisation of the Abuja -Keffi Road be extended to Akwanga and Lafia, and onward to Makurdi and Enugu, President Jonathan said that it was his belief that all the arterial roads into Federal Capital would be upgraded to expressways so as to facilitate easy movement in and out of the city.
