The Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University (NSUK), Professor Shamsudeen Amali has debunked rumours making the rounds that the university admission process was fraught with irregularities.
Professor Amali assured students seeking to study at NSUK of justice and fairness during the forthcoming admission exercise of the institution for the educational development of the state and the country in general.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Shamsudeen Amali gave the assurance when he led a delegation of principal officers of the university on a courtesy call to the Emir of Lafia at his palace in Lafia, last week.
According to him, “we are in the university for justice and we would ensure that the learning outfit becomes one of the world’s centre for academic excellence.”
Professor Amali refuted the allegations from some quarters that one could only gain admission into the university through god fatherism, describing the allegation as false.
The vice-chancellor said their visit was to seek for the emir’s royal blessings and prayers, assuring the emir of his loyalty to the traditional institution.
Responding, the Emir of Lafia, Alhaji (Dr) Isa Mustapha Agwai I welcomed the entourage, describing the visit as an honour to him.
Alhaji Mustapha Agwai I, assured the vice-chancellor of his emirate council’s readiness to work hand-in-hand with the university authority for the success of the institution.
In another development, the Vice Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), Professor Shamsudeen Amali has attributed the high level of poverty and the total collapse of social infrastructure in Nigeria to bad leadership at various levels of government.
Prof Amali, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of administration, Professor Mohammed Mainoma, gave the insight at a one-day summit for promoting excellence in leadership held at the National Merit House, Abuja last Thursday. He said that the root cause of the failure of past and present leadership in the country lied in the fact that: “those who govern us in the past and some who are still governing us, lack excellent leadership qualities, they lack integrity, accountability and transparency”, pointing out that these are the basic elements needed to move the country and, indeed, the African continent forward.
He said that it was impossible for Nigeria as a nation to move forward, so long as our leaders continued to loot the local treasury to foreign countries thereby helping those foreign economies to develop while we continue to lag behind in basic amenities, lamenting that our educational system is one of the worst in the world while the level of illiteracy, poverty, ignorance and disease were on the rise on a daily basis.
He, however, expressed his satisfaction that in spite of the unprecedented failure of leadership, few people have been identified for having distinguished themselves in terms of integrity, accountability and transparency in governance.
He commended the Africa International News Magazine, organizers of the event, for finding him worthy to join the class of distinguished Nigerians to be honoured with the Zenith International Award for Excellence and Africa Integrity Merit Award respectively.
“They have lived up to their corporate responsibility of mirroring society as a responsible medium”, he said, calling on other media organizations to emulate this example by x-raying the activities of individuals, government and corporate organizations as part of their constitutional and social responsibility.
Earlier in his keynote address, the convener of the event who is also the publisher of the News Magazine, Engineer Charles Ifechukwu Onwurah, noted that the bedrock of a sustainable socio-economic, political and technological development of any nation lied in her ability to integrate the virtues of integrity, accountability and transparency, in the framework of leadership, stressing that to achieve this goal, all hands must be on deck in the task of nation building.
Highlight of the event was the conferment of the Zenith International Award for Excellence and Africa Integrity Merit Awards on Professor Amali for his outstanding leadership qualities. Other recipients of the award included Engineer Mahmud Mahmud, a former Special Assistant to the FCT minister, Senator Adamu Aliero and former minister of health, Professor Adenike Grange, among others.
