In his continued efforts to change the socio-economic status of the state, Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma of Nasarawa State has assured that his government would continue to place youth empowerment as an integral part of his 13-point agenda, so as to ensure economic self-reliance and crime reduction in the state.

Governor Akwe Doma stated this in his welcome address at the 2010 international youth week celebration which took place at the Magaji Dan Yamusa NYSC permanent orientation camp Keffi, last week.

The governor, who was represented by the state deputy governor, Chief John Michael Abdul reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improve the lives of the citizens, saying the administration has placed youth empowerment as top priority in its 13 point agenda.

To achieve the aims and objectives of youth empowerment, the governor said, his administration has established and equipped skills acquisition centres across the three senatorial zones of the state to train youth in different trades, to create employment opportunities, wealth generation and reduction in poverty of the state.

Governor Doma reiterated that the state government also launched the Badakoshi agricultural scheme to encourage and attract youth to agricultural production to ensure food sufficiency and food security in the state.

The governor then urged youth in the state to use the opportunity of the state government initiatives to continue to show active interest to ensure their economic self reliance and crime reduction.

He also called on the youth to shun all anti-social acts such as crime, political thuggery, drug abuse and prostitution so as to become good future leaders.

Governor Doma commended the federal ministry of youth development and other collaborating bodies for their joint efforts in organizing the programme which, according to him, would go a long way in placing youth in the right direction to contribute their quota in the collective efforts of nation building.

The minister of youth development, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, in his remark highlighted the importance of the occasion, saying 12th August of every year has been declared by the United Nations Organization as international youth day to enable government and the while world complement and contribute their quota toward the development of the entire society.

The minister assured that his ministry is poised to do everything possible to create an enabling environment for the development of the Nigerian youths, adding that, the ministry had adequately prepared to consolidate all efforts toward the capacity building of the young ones so as to enable them compete favourably with their counterparts in the world.

He then called on youths to promote the ideals of peace, dialogue, mutual understanding, freedom and solidarity toward the promotion and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the country.

Senator Olasunkanmi then appealed to Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), religious leaders, cooperative bodies, policy makers and young people to join hands in combating all identified factors that would address the development of youth in the country and assured that government on its part would sustain its current efforts towards ensuring better development of Nigerian youth.

While calling on youths to maximize dialogue and mutual understanding which would guarantee the progress and development, the minister said, his ministry has concluded arrangement to commence vocational training of youths in eight national youth development centres spread across the geopolitical zones of the country and enjoined them to shun all anti-social act like political thuggery and electoral malpractices in the forthcoming general elections.

The occasion which was attended by top government functionaries, featured drama presentation, paper presentation, lectures among others.
