Wives of Local Government Chairmen in Nasarawa State have been advised to encourage the participation of women in government and political activities by promoting “affirmative action on women for change initiative.”

The advice was given by wife of the Nasarawa State Governor, Hajiya Raliya Aliyu Akwe Doma, during a courtesy visit by wives of the local government chairmen in her office at the Government House, Lafia.

The visit was to congratulate the first lady on the newly appointed adviser on women affairs, Hajiya Sa’adatu Ayitogo who was recently appointed in July 2010.

Speaking during the visit, Hajiya Doma congratulated the newly appointed adviser and expressed happiness for their visit to her office and  to show solidarity for increased appointment of women into political positions.

She urged women to work with the newly appointed adviser so as to achieve success for women in the state. She also stressed that, as women, they must strive to be obedient to their husbands by doing the right things irrespective of various religious and traditional norms which placed men above women.

Hajiya Doma stressed the need for more women to be educated so as to pick up the challenge of nation building, explaining that, education is the key towards promoting women participation in the years to come.

According to her, for women to succeed, there was the need to them to cooperate, speak with one voice and to also campaign for both women and their husbands for the progress of their local government and the state at large.

Hajiya Doma expressed dissatisfaction with the low participation of wives of local government chairmen in meaningful activities that would benefit women in the state.

She appealed to them to initiate meaningful programmes that would  benefit and educate the women folk at the grassroot level, adding that they should always give the women folks sense of belonging to enable them participate in government and political activities in the state.

She noted that educated and qualified women at the grassroot were always reluctant to seek for political office and urged them to always come out and contest for the posts of vice chairmen and councilors in the  state.
She also called on the chairmen of local government areas to give their wives the support that they would need.

Hajiya Doma advised them to be very active in terms of helping other women at the grassroot level and to initiate programmes on girl-child and adult education.  

Also speaking, the adviser to the governor on women affairs and social development, Hajiya Sa’adatu Ayitogo, expressed gratitude to Her Excellency for her motherly encouragement and support which has brought her where she is.

Hajiya Ayitogo said “it is a step forward for women in the state  to be found as women commissioners and advisers, maintaining that if women can do better to improve their education, they would surely get more political and government appointments in the state.

She also solicited the cooperation of wives of the local government chairmen and enjoined them to rub minds in order to work towards achieving progress for women so as to move forward.

She said “with the project of the fist lady of the country at hand, the wives of the 36 states governors are automatically patrons of women for change initiative in their state.”

She explained that Hajiya Doma, as the patron of women for change initiative in Nasarawa state, can only succeed if women come together and support the project so as to bridge the gap between women and their male counterparts.

She said that at the state level, wives of governors are to ensure that 35 per cent affirmative action are implemented by women, therefore the need for women to start from the grassroots, maintaining that women in Nasarawa state have been reluctant to take part in politics due to the fear of the  unknown.

She said as women, they should shun sentiment and jealousy so as to move forward, adding that, they should not take themselves high as wives of chairmen, commissioners and members but rather, embrace and motivate women and youth who are at the grassroot levels by giving them support.

Speaking earlier, leader of the delegation and wife of the chairman of Awe Local Government Area and also state chairman of ALGON, Hajiya Lubabatu M. Sa’eed congratulated the newly appointed adviser and urged her to be a worthy ambassador of women through commitment to her work.

Hajiya Sa’eed said they would continue to support and work with her so as to enable her as adviser guide them where it is necessary.

She also wished the adviser God’s guidance and wisdom to be able to contribute her quota towards the development of women and the state in general .
