Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, has expressed his concern over the continued increase of HIV/AIDS pandemic in the society, calling on the new corps members deployed to the state to exercise self-restraint and engage themselves in the public awareness campaign aimed at controlling the spread of the disease in the state.

Governor Akwe Doma made this call while presiding over the closing ceremony of the 2010 NYSC Batch “B” orientation course at the Magaji Danyamusa NYSC permanent orientation camp, Keffi last week.

The governor who was represented by the state deputy governor Chief John Michael Abdul, observed that with the increasing threat of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the society, youths were the most vulnerable and afflicted group. He implored the corps members to use their talents and energy to ensure proper awareness campaign and the control of the pandemic among youths in their respective host communities.

Governor Doma further appealed to the newly posted corps members to justify the aims and objectives of the NYSC scheme in the promotion of national unity as well as to ensure massive education, health care delivery, socio-economic engineering and integrated development in the state.

He noted that the National Youth Service Scheme was designed to give the youths opportunity to play pivotal roles in the development of the country and challenged the corps members to practically demonstrate good leadership qualities, patriotism, high moral standard and commitment to community service at all time.

The governor assured that the state government would provide ample opportunity to corps members to contribute their quota to the socio economic development of the state.

While congratulating the corps members for their successful completion of the orientation course, Governor Akwe Doma charged them to shun negative practices that would portray and damage their bright future and enjoined them to be patriotic and committed so as to become models and good leaders of tomorrow.

The governor also urged all employers of labour to ensure the provision of good working and living condition for the corps members to enable them work assiduously toward realizing their potentials.

 In his welcome address, the state commissioner of sports and youth development who doubles as the state chairman NYSC Governing Board, Mr. Danladi Mairiga Awaje commended Governor Akwe Doma for his kind gesture and support to the NYSC scheme through the provision and release of funds for the conduct of the camping exercise which, according to him, contributed  immensely to the success of the orientation course.

Mr. Awaje pointed out that the board received the total of 2,800 corps members for the 2010 Batch “B” orientation course out of which 1500 corps members were deployed to Nasarawa state while 1300 were also deployed to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja but camped in Nasarawa State to complete their national assignment.

Earlier, in his address, the Nasarawa State NYSC coordinator, Mr Emmanuel B. Ademuyi explained that the policy of rural posting of corps members was aimed at providing better healthcare and educational services to the rural communities across the country and commended the corps members for their conduct during the orientation course and their performance at the various inter-platoon competition.

The occasion featured inspection of the parade by the state deputy governor, Chief John Michael Abdul and the presentation of prizes to outstanding corp members.
