Ten senior police officers were last week convicted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) sitting in Abuja for failing to declare their assets as public officers.
All the 10 police officers had pleaded guilty to the offences upon arraignment and were summarily tried and convicted in line with the provisions of the CCT Act.
The Chairman of CCT, Justice Constance Momoh (rtd.), while announcing the sentences also imposed fines on the convicted police officers.
Eight of the convicted police officers were fined N10,000.00 each with an option of being suspended from the Force for one year while the remaining two were ordered to pay a fine of N5,000.00 each or vacate their official duty for six months.
However, another senior police officer was set free on the grounds that he had retired and did actually declare his assets although two days late.
In a related development, the tribunal has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, to arrest 15 officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo Sector Command, for their continued refusal to appear before it on charges of non– declaration of assets.
The tribunal recalled that it had at several occasions issued summons to the officers requesting them to appear before it and stand trial for their alleged offences, but the said officers remained defiant.
It would be recalled that on March 11, 2008, Chairman of CCT Justice Constance Momoh, had summoned the said officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission for contravening the enabling act establishing it by failing to declare their assets.
Justice Momoh threatened to issue a bench warrant for their arrest if they failed to appear at the tribunal. The CCT chairman made good her promise last week by directing the I-GP to produce the men in court on the next adjourned date.
