Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma has described the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme as an essential tool for the integration and unity of the youths in Nigeria.
The governor, who was speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of Batch B corps members at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Keffi, noted that, the NYSC “is also a platform to prepare you physically and emotionally for the onerous task of contributing your service to our fatherland”.
The governor called on the corpers to participate in all the orientation activities so as to maximally benefit from the exercise.
“I equally challenge you all to see yourselves as vanguards of positive change and development in whichever communities you will be deployed for your primary assignments. You must therefore integrate fully into your host communities and identify with their culture, customs and aspirations”, he said.
Represented by his deputy, Chief Michael Abdul, Gov Doma equally drew the attention of the corpers to the numerous challenges ahead of them particularly in the critical areas of concern such as mass literacy, entrepreneurship development, campaign against the HIV/AIDS pandemic and rural health care delivery, urging them to work with the people to address the problems.
“On our own part, we shall continue to support the scheme within the limits of our resources with a view to strengthening and enhancing its capacity”, he said.
Also speaking at the occasion, chairman of the state NYSC governing board who is also the commissioner for youth and sports development Mr. Danlami Awaje, assured the governor that the board would judiciously use all the facilities provided by the state government to guarantee the success of the scheme in the state.
He congratulated the corps members posted to the state, charging them to be committed in the discharge of their primary assignments in the state.
A total of 2,500 corps members were duly registered and sworn-in for the 2010 service year in the state.
