Nasarawa State Government is to give special attention to the funding of Government Science School, Lafia with the aim of producing science students in the state.

The school which is being prepared to be a training ground for students interested in science subjects, would soon be given a face lift, as plans are on ground to equip the school’s science laboratory with the necessary facilities.

This is coming, as the Lafia Old Boys Association (LOSA) and the Parents- Teachers Association (PTA) are putting efforts together to restore the lost glory of the former Government College, now science school, Lafia.

The state commissioner for education, Alhaji Suleiman Ubam made this known while commissioning a block of hostel built by Parents -Teachers Association of Government Secondary School, Lafia, penultimate Saturday.

The commissioner who said education was no longer a luxury but a necessity, reiterated the state government’s effort towards improving the standard of education, adding that, all hands must also be on deck to ensure its being a reality, as government alone cannot provide education for all.

He said fencing Government Science School Lafia, renovation of students hostels, and ensuring enough teachers and facilities for science teaching, would be the immediate steps government would take.

The commissioner said that, for this to become reality, government would collaborate with the Education Trust Fund (ETF) to assist the state in that direction.

Alhaji Ubam commended the PTA of the school for putting in place the structure and called on others to emulate the Lafia Science School PTA for providing conducive learning environment in the school.

The commissioner who said he was not satisfied with the general performance of teachers in the state, blamed the teachers for the increasing rate of examination malpractice.

He expressed optimism that with the recruitment of 2,500 teachers in the state, cases of examination malpractice, and other factors responsible for poor teaching would be reduced.

Alhaji Ubam added that, another 2,500 teachers would be recruited next month in addition to the ones on ground to make a total of 5000 teachers approved for employment in the state by Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma.
