The Nasarawa State branch of the Nigerian Library Association has held its 6th Annual Conference and General Meeting in Lafia.

The Nasarawa State branch of the Nigerian Library Association has held its 6th Annual Conference and General Meeting in Lafia.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference, Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma charged librarians in the State to examine ways in which libraries can benefit from the use of Information and Communications Technology. He stated that his Administration has drawn up a 13-point agenda in which education and information provision feature prominently.

Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Rebecca Umaru, the Governor stated that Nasarawa State was ready to partner with all federal agencies which were willing to establish presence in Nasarawa State. Governor Doma listed the Open University as one of the educational institutions which have been assisted to establish offices in the State. He therefore announced that plans are at advanced stage to provide infrastructure for the Nasarawa State branch of the National Library of Nigeria.

Earlier, the State Chairman of the library Association, Isaac Umaru Namo, called on the state government to introduce the use of ICT’s in its schools.

The 6th Conference has its theme as Sourcing Information in a Globalised Environment, the Nigerian Experience. Guests at the conference included a representative of the National Librarian, Mallam Habib Jato.
