In a related development, the wife of the Nasarawa State governor, Hajiya Raliya Akwe Doma who was represented by commissioner for women affairs, Mrs. Rebecca Isaac Umaru on the occasion of the children’s party held at Ibrahim Abacha Youth Centre in Lafia, said that May 27 every year has been set aside by government to honour children and bring to focus issues that enhance their development well being as leaders of tomorrow.

She said children require love, care, recreation and affection as well as protection against physical, emotional and psychological danger which surrounded their environment.

According to her, this responsibility was largely vested upon parents, guardians, adults, teachers and indeed all, who contribute in one way or the other to the welfare and upbringing of the children in the society.

She further explained that the theme for this year’s celebration was meant to sensitize the public on the need for adequate and qualitative nutrition for the survival and optimal development of children, adding that the well being of the mother is equally important.

Mrs. Umaru frowned at the inadequate amount of food given to children while over 50 per cent of Nigerian infants are given complementary food too early which are usually of poor nutritional value.

She therefore, contended that health workers, mothers and care givers require appropriate nutritional information, counseling and support to ensure optimal feeding of infants and young children so as to prevent malnutrition.
