Nasarawa State Governor, Aliyu Akwe Doma has distributed bulk school furniture and instructional materials to primary and junior secondary schools in the State.

The presentation which was done simultaneously in the three senatorial districts saw the Governor presenting 14,000 units of collapsible tables and chairs as well as 336.334 prescribed textbooks to the schools.

In a speech at the occasion, the Governor stated that the tables and chairs cost N175million while the textbooks cost N468million. The books are in the core subjects of mathematics, English language, basic science and social studies.

Governor Doma used to occasion to explain his education programme by saying that education occupies an important component of his 13-Point Agenda. The aim is to continue to provide qualitative and affordable educational opportunities, particularly for the youth at all levels, through progressive and result-oriented educational policies and programmes.

In the same vein, Governor Doma promised to extend his education reform programme to the secondary and tertiary institutions in the State during the 2010 fiscal year by making adequate provision for them in the budget.

During the ceremony, Governor Doma announced a new policy of school management in keeping with the spirit of “education for all is the responsibility of all”. Under the arrangement, a School Management Committee shall be established for every school in the State with effect from 1st January, 2010. Each primary and secondary school in the State shall be managed by a Committee made up of Traditional Rulers, community leaders, religious leaders, Parent-Teachers Associations, youth and women leaders, and other prominent sons and daughters of the school immediate community.

The role of this all important Committee shall be to advise, guide and assist school authorities in the areas of school enrolment and attendance, welfare of teachers, discipline of students, school security, as well as provision and improvement of school facilities and infrastructures.

The occasion was attended by traditional rulers, community leaders and stakeholders in the education.
