Speech by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji (Dr.) Aliyu Akwe Doma, OON (Madauchin Doma), on the Occasion of the Conferment of Most Outstanding Entrepreneurial Achievement Award by Checkout Magazine, Sunday, 14th November, 2009

It is with gratitude to God the Almighty and a deep sense of humility that I stand before you on this occasion to receive the Most Outstanding Entrepreneurial Achievement Award in recognition our efforts at exporting Nasarawa State yam into the United Kingdom and other European markets, under the trade name Pepa Yam Nigeria.

It is for me a privilege to be so honoured in the presence of very distinguished personalities who are gathered here from various countries of Africa and Europe to attend the 1st Nigeria-Ghana Networking Summit in the United Kingdom.

Ladies and gentlemen, I consider the Award conferred on me today as encouraging, as it is inspiring. Apart from recognising our efforts at transforming the socio-economic status of our people, the award symbolises a recognition of our focussed determination to continue to provide service in the best interest of our people.

Furthermore, this Award is a reward for our hardwork and determination to ensure that we place Nasarawa State in the league of major players in the national and international economies.

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, it would be recalled that in July this year, Pepa Yam Nigeria was formally launched here in London at the Nigeria High Commission. The landmark event was the culmination of various exploratory trials to introduce our agricultural produce into the competitive international market. The success of that launching ceremony, and the acceptance of our yam in the market thereafter, has been most encouraging and satisfying.

It is in this context that I wish to thank Checkout Magazine for recognising and celebrating our dogged exploits and ingenuity in launching Pepa Yam into the highly regulated United Kingdom market.

Let me therefore use this opportunity to pledge our readiness to ensure a viable trade and investment environment in all sectors of our State economy, particularly in the areas of agriculture, solid minerals, tourism and real estate development. I assure all investors of the existence of an enabling environment such as security of investment and easy access to land titles.

Ladies and gentlemen, in receiving this award today, I wish to dedicate it to the enterprising spirit of the people of Nasarawa State through whose support we have this God-given opportunity to provide service.

I would like to conclude this address by expressing my gratitude to the Editorial Board of Checkout Magazine as well as the organisers of this event for considering me worthy of this respected recognition.

Thank you and God bless.
