Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has frowned at the increasing trend of admission racketeering within the institution, warning that any member of staff caught indulging in the act would be dealt with.

The vice- chancellor, Professor Adamu Baikie, gave the warning in Keffi during the university’s matriculation ceremony for 2007/2008 academic session.

The vice- chancellor said that “of recent, some staff and even students have constituted themselves into admission vendors.”

He stated that anyone caught engaging in admission irregularities would be summarily dismissed.

He added that any student who was found at any point in time to have been illegally admitted would be expelled, even if he/she is in the final year.

Stressing the importance of matriculation exercise, the vice- chancellor, said that the event was a memorable one because it marked the initiation of new students into the membership of the university community, the norms and tradition of the institution.”

He said the university has introduced a system of lecture attendance cards in all faculties enjoining students to make sure they “carry the cards with them to every lecture”.

“At the end of each semester, any student who is found not to have attended at least 75% of the lectures in each course will not be allowed to write the examination in that particular course”, he said.

Professor Baikie charged the newly matriculated students to shun the evil vices of examination misconduct, cultism, indecent dressing and “any other social vice that you know is inimical to our education pursuit”.

He reiterated the university’s readiness to ensure moral and academic discipline by maintaining the good standard for which the university was known for.

A total of 1,500 students matriculated for various first degree courses offered by the institution.
