The senate committee chairman on health, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has said that the senate would support the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) in whatever way possible to enable it continue in its fight against fake and substandard products in the country.

Senator Obasanjo who stated this during the 7th national award ceremony for winners of the annual secondary school competition for members of the NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) in Abuja recently, said that, what NAFDAC was doing was a combination of health and education which deserves the support of the senate and all Nigerians.

While commending the NAFDAC management for the initiative, Senator Obasanjo said "the senate has confidence in Dr. Orhii and the senate committee on health would support him to do a better job," urging other organizations to emulate what NAFDAC was doing, as according to her, "any country that does not give due attention to the health and education of its children has let the future go."

Earlier, the Director General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, said that the NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club was a public enlightenment and sensitization programme of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control in its efforts in the eradication of fake and substandard regulated products campaign, adding that, the club was aimed at informing and educating members to collaborate with the agency on safeguarding the health of the nation.

Continuing, Dr Orhii said that the objectives of the consumer safety club among others were to re-orientate the youth and redirect their energies away from anti-social behaviour while redirecting them towards safe health habits and meaningful developments to sensitize members on the need to safeguard the health of the community and also to assist in information flow on NAFDAC’s regulatory activities.

While calling on corporate bodies and other government organizations to partner with NAFDAC in realizing the objectives of the club and to expand its membership to include more schools at the primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, Dr. Orhii said "our mission is to mould a future generation, that not only is empowered to be upright, but demand uprightness from others."
