Farmers in Nasarawa State have been called upon to adequately prepare their farmlands for the rainy season to enable them have bumper harvest.
The commissioner for agriculture and natural resources, Alhaji Mohammed Iyimoga Oyigye, stated this in an exclusive interview with Nigerian Newsday in Lafia, last week.
Alhaji Oyigye said that the state government has made enough planning to support farmers in this year’s planting season by subsidizing fertilizer and other implements.
He stated that the state government has purchased enough urea fertilizer and that they were awaiting the supply of more fertilizer by the Federal Government.
He said that already there was a tractor to each local government and development area, adding that seventeen new brand tractors have been bought to be distributed to farmers to boost farming in the state.
The commissioner said further that the fourteen tractors collected from the Zimbabwean white farmers in Panda Development Area would also soon be distributed to farmers.
He also disclosed that soft loans would be given to youths in the state to start farming business that would empower them.
Alhaji Oyigye said that the ministry has varieties of improved crops to be distributed to farmers before the farming season.
He challenged farmers to consider their “farm work as important as themselves, because the state government is focusing on agriculture to give the state enough food”.
