Being Text of a Speech by His Excellency, Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, OON (Madauchin Doma), Executive Governor, Nasarawa State, on the Occasion of the Swearing-in Ceremony of a Newly Appointed Commissioner And Some Members of the State Civil Service Commission, Wednesday, 7th January, 2009.
PROTOCOL:
It gives me great pleasure to address you today on this important occasion of the swearing-in ceremony of:
A new Commissioner and Member of the State Executive Council; and,
Four (4) members of the Nasarawa State Civil Service Commission.
Today’s event is coming barely one week after I presented the 2009 budget of Consolidation to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly wherein I reiterated the commitment of this Administration to deliver quality service to the people. In doing so, we are committed to the entrenchment of a culture of selfless and total service, as well as building a regime of transparency and accountability.
It is therefore necessary that a purposeful and competent leadership in all agencies of Government is put in place as a catalyst for the achievement of these objectives.
I believe that the large turnout of the public at this occasion is not only an indication of support for this Administration and solidarity with those being sworn-in, but also an expectation of the best of their services in the delivery of democratic dividends to the people.
Ladies and gentlemen, in considering these individuals for appointment into the State public service, due consideration was given to personal integrity, contributions to society, wealth of experience and proven record of performance. I am convinced that these appointees would enrich the policies and programmes of this Administration.
Let me therefore, on behalf of the Government and people of Nasarawa State, congratulate you for these well deserved appointments. I urge you to use your appointments to provide selfless service to the people of Nasarawa State. However, you need to be reminded that by these appointments, the entire State has become your constituency.
I must also remind you that these appointments are not meant for you to pursue self interest. Your conduct as public officers must therefore be guided by the principles of diligence, honesty, integrity and fairness. In the discharge of your responsibilities, you are required to promote team work, and more importantly, ensure respect for constituted authority and compliance with due process.
At this juncture, I will like to remind us that the Civil Service Commission, as an appellate body on matters of appointments, promotion and discipline in the Civil Service, has a great task to perform in enforcing ethical standards. Let me also draw attention to the determination of this Administration to sustain all efforts in the reorganization and strengthening of the Civil Service towards ensuring that the service responds with speed and efficiency in the implementation of Government policies and programmes. In this connection, I urge the members of the Commission to join us in this crusade.
Ladies and gentlemen, I cannot conclude this address without once again requesting all civil servants, indeed, all public officers in the State, to always demonstrate commitment, loyalty, integrity and support in the discharge of their responsibilities. Only in this way, can we leave a legacy of selfless service on the sands of time.
On this note, ladies and gentlemen, I heartily welcome our new Commissioner and Members of the Civil Service Commission on board, in the service of the Government and people of Nasarawa State.
Thank you and God bless.
