A laundryman engaged by the National Youth Sevice Corps (NYSC) and some members of the camp security team have been fingered in the recruitment of fake corps members.
The camp director, Hajiya M. Mohammed, disclosed this last week at the NYSC temporary orientation camp at Dutse, Abuja.
According to the camp director, twenty-three fake corps members have so far been arrested by the security personnel for their involvement in the false recruitment of the corpers and have since been charged to a magistrate court in Kubwa, Abuja .
"After we interrogated the fake corps members, it was revealed that some members of the camp security team allowed some fake corps members into the camp premises illegally, while a laundryman was giving out kits to these people," she said.
She said six of the suspects have been sentenced to various terms while the cases of the remaining three were still being heard at the court.
The Abuja coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Justina Andirya, also disclosed that some of the culprits have been taken to the NYSC secretariat for further investigations.
"Some of them with fake NYSC call-up letters have been moved to the secretariat. This is to allow for detailed investigations to commence on those responsible since their case is that of forgery," she said.
The camp commandant, Major I.D Bashiru, said two of the military personnel on the camp implicated in the recruitment of fake corps members have been sent back to the barracks.
"It became necessary to send the men away in order to tell others that no one can get away with any act that is capable of compromising security in the camp. I also directed a member of the Man ‘O’ War to be decamped," she said.
In a related development, two people were killed while five others were injured including a police corporal at the NYSC camp at Asayan in Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State last Monday after an overhead water tank fell on them.
An eyewitness said that the tank which supplies water to the camp fell, during a rainstorm around 6.00 p.m.
The names of those who lost their lives were given as follows, Toyin Adekola and Isaac Oseyi, who were traders at the camp, while some of the injured were said to be buying goods when the incident happened.
The corps members were at the parade ground, rehearsing, when the tank fell.
The state director of the NYSC, Mr. Gabriel Ibe, told newsmen that the overhead tank was built about 10 years ago to supply water to the camp.
