The Director of Development control in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Yahaya Yusuf has warned that the government’s posture on rule of law and due process should not be construed as license to abuse the Abuja Master Plan as was the case in the past.

Yusuf gave the warning in Abuja last week when he lead a team to demolish some illegal structures in the city, pointing out that any building constructed without the required approval would be removed.

He disclosed that the department would in addition to demolishing illegal structures, surcharge owners of such structures in line with the provisions of the law. Meanwhile, the FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo, has directed that henceforth, public buildings under construction in the FCT must be insured in line with international guidelines.

The minister this directive in his office last week while receiving members of the Nigerian Insurers Association, led by its chairman, Mr. Wole Oshin. Dr. Modibbo, who regretted the incident of building collapse in Utako district of the FCT, said the FCT administration had dug into the immediate causes of building collapse with a view to avoid its re-occurrence.

He said the administration was working to put into action, the recommendations of the committee that investigated the collapsed building, adding that all departments had been instructed to ensure that developers complied with the laws by insuring all public buildings under construction.

Dr. Modibbo said the administration had released its findings as well as the White Paper on the collapsed building to the press for transparency.

The minister, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Adamu Ismaila, assured that vehicles plying Abuja roads would be made to have motor vehicle (Third Party) insurance,
