The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Musa Ahmed Mohammed, has directed the standing committee on education to verify the accreditation status of some courses offered by the Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

The directive followed a motion moved by Honourable Lagi Innocent, member representing Wamba constituency, on the lack of accreditation of the faculty of law of the university, which according to him, has led to the rejection of the law graduates of the university by the Nigerian Law School.

Honourable Innocent said the motion was also intended to address the high school fees being charged by the council for legal education, adding that presently, the council was charging the sum of N350,000 as school fees per student at the law school.

Contributing to the debate on the motion, Honourable Adamu Mu’azu Adogi, observed that it was disheartening to note that the students of the state owned university were denied admission into the law school, stressing that a committee should be set-up to investigate the matter.

Also speaking on the motion, Honourable Philip A. Gyunka, suggested that the dean of the faculty of law of the university should be invited to appear before the House to explain why the law course was not accredited.

He suggested that the standing committee on education should be mandated to find out from the authority of the university how the N200 million allocated to the university in the 2007/2008 budget was spent.

The chief whip of the House, Honourable Hashimu D. Jada, in his contribution, suggested that government should shoulder the burden of paying the school fees for the law students, pointing out that some law students were stranded because they could not pay their school fees.
