Issues bordering on local government autonomy, states and local governments creation as well as revenue sharing formula among the tiers of government would form the major areas of focus during the proposed constitutional amendment by the National Assembly.
Honourable Godfrey Gaiya, representing Jaba and Zango Kataf Federal Constituency of Kaduna State in the House of Representatives, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Nigerian Newsday in Abuja, last week.
He revealed that the House of Representatives has identified about eight critical areas that needed urgent attention in the constitution, saying that the areas would be thoroughly addressed by the lawmakers.
Honourable Gaiya stated the need for the creation of additional states and local governments, noting that doing so "will accelerate development, bring the government closer to the people, and give the common man a sense of belonging."
Supporting the call for the scrapping of the states electoral bodies, the lawmaker said, "scrapping them would minimize electoral malpractices and manipulation by the state governments during councils polls."
The House of Representatives member, who urged that the people of his constituency to be patient, peaceful and hardworking, commended the effort of the Kaduna State Government led by Architect Namadi Sambo for tackling the issue of insecurity in the state with the introduction of Operation Yaki and for his commitment towards fulfilling his campaign promises to the people.
