The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the recruitment exercise in Jos received applications from all the 17 council areas of the state.
NAN gathered that 5,000 forms were sold by the police authority with the minimum educational requirement pegged at five Ordinary Level credits including Mathematics and English.
"I have five credits including English and D7 in Mathematics but I was disqualified and I saw people with only three credits without Mathematics being taken," one Miss Mary Nanchang alleged.
Some applicants queried what constables needed a credit in Mathematics for and that the minimum requirements should have been indicated in the forms.
The applicants alleged that they were made to pay N1,200 for medical tests at the Police Clinic, saying they paid about N4,000 each on different charges. The police authority said 3,851 people submitted their forms while the minimum educational qualification was five credits or passes in five subjects including English and Mathematics.
The state police command spokesperson, Bala Kassim, said meeting the minimum educational standard did not mean automatic qualification.
According to him, other factors such as height and age were among the requirements. ``Even if you have 15 credits including Mathematics and English, it does not mean automatic qualification.
''Somebody has eight credits but when he was asked to spell ‘school’, he could not," he said.
According to him, the minimum required height for a man was put at 1.68 meters and 1.64 meters for a woman while the eligible age was between 19 and 25.
The police spokesman said the applicants were also asked to write their autobiographies as part of the screening.
