The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Musa Ahmed Mohammed, has given the assurance that the local government elections in the state would be conducted on the first of November 2008, as scheduled.

The Speaker who disclosed this last week, said the chairman of the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC), Alhaji Musa Agyo, has confirmed to him that the agency was prepared for the conduct of the local government elections successfully.

Speaking through the House Committee chairman on NASIEC, Honourable Ahmed S. Eyibo, during a visit to the NASIEC, the Speaker said that the House was concerned about the level of preparations of the commission for the conduct of the councils polls.

He told journalists that Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma was committed to the conduct of the local government elections, calling on the people of Nasarawa State to co-operate with NASIEC to ensure hitch-free polls.

The lawmaker, however, lamented the deplorable office condition of NASIEC, calling for the relocation of NASIEC office immediately to a more suitable location.

According to him, the NASIEC office complex lacked adequate space to accommodate its staff, and other valuable materials needed for the November elections.

In a related development, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly has set up a five-man committee to investigate the refusal by contractors collecting revenue from motorists on the highways in the state to obey orders from the House asking them to desist from doing so.

The five-man committee chaired by the assembly’s minority leader, Honourable Mary Enwongulu.

Other members of the committee included Honourable Raphael Saaka, Honourable Innocent Lagi, Honourable Adamu Mu’azu and Honourable Aliyu Musa Abdullahi.

The Speaker who directed the clerk of the state Assembly, Mr. Moses Ondaki to inform the security agencies about the decision of the House, warned that anyone found collecting such revenue would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
