The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Musa Ahmed Mohammed, has given the assurance that the House would expedite action on the passage of the local government bill in order to pave way for the conduct of elections at the local councils.
The speaker gave the assurance in an exclusive interview with Nigerian Newsday at Abuja, during a one-day sensitization workshop for speakers and other principal officers of states houses of assembly organized by the Code of Conduct Bureau.
The speaker, however, disclosed that the proposed constitution of the Advisory Management Committee (AMC) for the local government areas by the state government has been put on hold by the house, following deliberations on the matter at the floor of the House.
The speaker, however, debunked claims made by opposition parties in the state that the elections were being delayed in order to put the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at a vantage position, pointing out that the House would ensure a level playing ground for all political parties before, during and after the local government elections.
On the assertions being made in some quarters that the Assembly was being influenced by the executive in the performance of its functions, Hon. Mohammed said such a situation was not applicable in Nasarawa State, stressing that the principle of separation of powers was being strictly adhered to in the state.
Hon. Mohammed cited the example of the 2008 budget which was submitted to the House in November, 2007, saying that it took the House three months of careful deliberations before the budget was passed by the House.
His words: "Take for instance the appropriation bill sent to us on the 28th of November, 2007.  It took us about three months working on that bill.  So, the issue of the executive influencing the legislature is not applicable to us in Nasarawa State."
