Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma of Nasarawa State has said that ``insecurity and disagreements within the political parties'' caused the delay in the conduct of council polls. It would be recalled that the state the assembly had given the governor 90 days to conduct the council polls.
However, a letter written by Doma at the expiration of the deadline to explain the delay to the legislators, was read on the floor of the House.
Doma said he remained resolute to usher in elected leaders at the third tier of government.
He said he had put in place all structures for the exercise, except for the issues raised in the letter.
Contributing to the debate, Mr Innocent Lagi (Labour Party -Wamba constituency), said the assembly should have given the governor a specific date for the polls.
Lagi, who recently came to the assembly after winning a re-run election, blamed his colleagues for giving the governor a room to give excuses. He said the legislature had the powers under the Local Government Electoral Act to specify a date for conduct of the election.
Supporting the argument, Mr Ishak Kana, representing Kokona constituency, said the non conduct of the polls had subjected the few political office holders to some difficulties.
As the debate generated more heat from members of the opposition parties, Alhaji Musa Ahmed, the House Speaker, adjourned the sitting.
This, he said, would give room for consultations before the resumption of sitting today. (NAN)
