Special Adviser on Legislative Liaison to the Governor of Nasarawa State, Barrister Labaran S. Magaji has said plans were on ground to carry out an extensive awareness campaign on the need for the indigenes of the state to initiate private bills in the State House of Assembly.
Barrister Magaji stated this in an interview with Nigerian Newsday in Lafia last week ,. He said presentation of private member bill was so minimal that the issue needed to be over emphasized.
According to him people needed to know that they have the right to sponsor private bills in the State House of Assembly , provided such bills were in the best interest of the state, country , its people and to some extent in line with the agenda set out by the government.
Barrister Magaji who said the main function of his office was to liaise between the state executive and legislative arm of government to ensure harmonious working relationship of the two arms, further stated "since the inception of this administration, there has been a cordial relationship between the two arms because of the maturity of the two organs."
According to him the progress of democracy was measured when there was a harmonious working relationship between the executive and the legislative arms .
He condemned impeachment because according to him it was a set back in any democratic process.
He rejected the opinions that some state Houses of Assembly in the country were enjoying a good working relationship with the executive because the members were stooges of the executives.
He also said that to ensure quality law making by the legislators the state government recently sponsored members of the state assembly to London where they attended a seminar on legislative leadership at the London College of Management and that attending such seminars /workshops would be a continuos process.
Barrister Magaji then called on the people of the state to be law- abiding and be loyal to the government of the day. He also sued for peaceful co-existence ,patience and stressed "The era of fighting each other over things that can be avoided was over" He called on people to make patience their watch word, saying "if you struggled for something today and you did not get it maintain patience because other opportunities will still come your way".
He further called for support for governor of the state , Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma to enable him deliver the dividends of democracy to the people in line with his 13 -point agenda.
