Mrs Laetitia Akinlami, the Director-General of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, last week began a nationwide sensitisation campaign on the activities of the council.

Akinlami told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia after a visit to Kaduna, Niger and Nasarawa States, that the campaign was aimed at enlightening the grassroots on the objectives of the council.

Akinlami noted that a majority of the people, who the council had assisted ``do not even know the name of the council, let alone where it is located''.

She added that the nationwide sensitisation campaign would be a continuous exercise until the aim
was realised.

``The exercise is aimed at letting our clients, the indigent Nigerians, who cannot meet their legal needs due to financial constraints, know that the council was established for their sake.

``We will let them know how to reach us when in distress,'' she said.. ``We shall equally educate them on how to avoid violating the law as well as educate them on their fundamental human rights.

``The sensitisation is tagged `because we care, we act diligent and decisively' and we will not stop campaigning until every Nigerian knows what we do,'' she said.

Mr Adamu Ankuta, one of the beneficiaries of the council's legal services in Keffi, lauded the council's
initiative, saying that this was this first time of hearing about the council ``Though I have not heard of this body before, but if actually they abide by what they preach I thanked them and the Federal Government for establishing it,'' he said.
