The members of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Nasarawa State Chapter, have disassociated themselves from the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) nationwide.
The ASUSS members stated their position during a press briefing addressed by the state chairman of the union, Comrade Gabriel Agbashi, at the NUJ Press Centre, Lafia, last week.
Comrade Agbashi explained that secondary school tutors in Nasarawa State have since withdrawn their membership of the NUT, adding that the ASUSS was now a duly registered union.
The chairman called on all secondary school tutors to disassociate themselves and withdraw from the NUT nationwide strike, advising his members to return to their classrooms without further delay.
Comrade Agbashi insisted that ASUSS remained the only body legally representing the interest and welfare of secondary school tutors in all matters and as such "the only body that can direct secondary school tutors to carry out any action at the state level".
It would be recalled that the Nigeria Union of Teachers embarked on an indefinite strike action nationwide last week to press home its demand for the implementation of a teachers’ salary structure for teachers.
The action of the teachers led to the closure of all public primary and secondary schools in the country.
