Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, has warned against the practice of imposition of candidates on the electorates by community leaders in the state.

He urged those involved in the practice to desist henceforth in the interest of peace and harmony in the state.

He gave the warning in Lafia, the state capital last week, when the members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state executive council and local government chapter paid him a courtesy call in his Shendam Road office in Lafia.

The governor enjoined community leaders to allow a level playing ground to prevail as the state prepared to hold local government elections.

While advising the community leaders, the governor said that “as leaders, you must resist the urge to associate yourselves with one candidate at the expense of another”.

He charged the leaders to shun favouritism and be just in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Governor Doma emphasized the need for the leaders to always strive to maintain and promote peace among their subjects, saying that political differences of the people should not be allowed to threaten the development of the state.

He restated his administration’s commitment to the transformation of the state, calling on citizens to give the government all the needed support.

Earlier, the state chairman of the party, Honourable Yunana Iliya, said the party’s officials were at the Government House to congratulate the governor over the award conferred on him for the best performing governor in Northern Nigeria by the African Independent Television (AIT).

Honourable Iliya who attributed the award to the governor’s relentless effort and determination to leave the state better than he met it, applauded the governor’s efforts at transforming the state.

He assured the state government of the readiness of the PDP to work for the progress of the state.

The party chairman, informed the governor that the PDP was ready for the forthcoming local government elections assuring that “the party will achieve victory during the elections.”

In a vote of thanks, Honourable Mohammed Ahmed Al-Makura commended the governor for his service to the people, urging him, however to do more for the state.

It would be recalled that an appellate court, sitting in Abuja, recently nullified the election of Honourable Mohammed Al-Makura as member representing Lafia/Obi Federal Constituency of Nasarawa State in the House of Representatives and ordered for a re-run election.

As it turned out, he emerged victorious in the re-run election held on June 7, 2008.
