Fire has destroyed property worth over N30 million at the permanent campus of the Kaduna State College of Education (KSCOE), Gidan-Waya, Kafanchan.
The fire, which was presumed to have been allegedly caused by some aggrieved students, was said to have started at the early hours of that fateful day and razed down a block of about ten offices as well as classrooms, destroying computers, books and various documents.
Speaking after inspecting the scene of the incident, the state commissioner for education, Alhaji Lawal Kauru, described the development as unfortunate.
Represented by the director of higher education in the ministry, Mrs. R. M. Shock, the commissioner commended the reformatory measures so far adopted by the college sole administrator, Mr. Ishaya Dare-Akau to improve the standard of the institution.
He stated that the ministry was in total support of the administrator’s effort directed at repositioning the institution, and urged staff and students to extend same to him to restore the lost glory of the college.
In his comment, the sole administrator, Mr. Dare Akau, said no amount of intimidation would derail him from pursuing the noble objectives of the college “which include the production of qualitative teachers to enhance teaching and learning in schools”.
The administrator pointed out that stringent measures have been taken to forestall the reoccurrence of the incident as the college would not in any way compromise standards.
He added “We can roughly estimate the total cost at about N30 million but you can meet the quantity surveyor of the college for details”.
The administrator then called on the entire college community to consider the protection of public property as a responsibility of all, and not that of the administrator alone.
The president of students’ union government of the college, Mr. Musa Kingsley, condemned the act, describing it as barbaric.
He called for stiff measures against anybody found guilty of the sad event.
It was reported that the academic board of the college prior to the incident withdrew 545 students and repeated 313, an action that was suspected to have given birth to the protest by the affected students.
