Being Text of an Address by His Excellency, Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, OON (Garkuwan Doma), Executive Governor of Nasarawa State at the Official Opening Ceremony of the Annual Conference/General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Holding in Lafia, Thursday, November 8, 2007.
It is with gratitude to God that I welcome you, on behalf of the Government and people of Nasarawa State to Lafia, our State Capital, on the occasion of the 2007 Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.
2. The President of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, Ladies and gentlemen, the choice of our state as host of this Annual General Meeting is very significant to us. We are highly honoured by the presence of distinguished personalities and major players in the Public Relations profession in our midst today. It is our hope that this auspicious occasion will afford you the opportunity to familiarise yourselves with our people and our state.
3. I am informed that this meeting of the Institute has been put in place for members to share information and knowledge on best practices in the profession. It is therefore my hope that discussions at this conference will mark a turning point in the practice of public relations in Nigeria. I urge you to feel at home in Nasarawa State and enjoy your stay with us.
4. Let me use this opportunity to commend the entire leadership of the Institute for granting us the privilege of hosting this conference. I am happy to inform you that this conference is the first national gathering that this Administration is hosting since we assumed the mantle of leadership a little over five months ago. I therefore once more wish to express the appreciation of the Government and people of Nasarawa State to the Institute for the honour done to us.
5. Ladies and Gentlemen, the role of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations in enhancing communication between Governments, organisations and the public cannot be overemphasised. By ensuring free flow of communication, public relations practitioners help to reduce conflict and misunderstandings in the society. I therefore urge you to consider your role in governance as very vital to the growth and development of our country.
6. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I note that the theme of this year's conference is "Public Relations, National Reform and Good Governance". I am happy that this theme is in consonance with the seven point agenda of the Federal Government led by His Excellency, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The choice of this theme is a demonstration of the preparedness of Public Relations practitioners to support the efforts of the present Administration to re-brand Nigeria and make it the centre piece of economic development in Africa and indeed the world.
7. As you are all aware, good governance, accountability and transparency are important ingredients of democracy. In other words, the objective of good governance, as being implemented by this Administration, is to ensure the provision of better quality of life for all Nigerians.
8. Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, it is my opinion that public relations practitioners have the responsibility to understand public perceptions and truthfully communicate these to government. They should endeavour to provide free flow of information on government policies and actions to the general public for the good of all.
9. In this highly technological information age, the Public Relations professional needs to have a high sense of intellectual judgement, creativity, confidence and above all courage. I dare to say therefore that given the relevance of your profession, which is all about helping us to manage our relations with all our publics, a lot is expected of you.
10. As you are all aware, we are now dealing with more informed and discerning publics. They are hungry for knowledge and truth and the success of any government in marketing its policies and achievements - external and internal - will depend on the level of professionalism, which you as Public Relations practitioners provide. I urge you therefore to tell the Nigerian story from our own perspective at all times.
11. Distinguished, ladies and gentlemen, I am aware that this conference will also produce new officials for the Institute. Permit me therefore to advise you to conduct the elections in such a way as to enhance the unity and corporate existence of the Institute.
12. On this note, it is now my pleasure to declare the 2007 Annual General Meeting of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, open.
13. Thank you and God bless.

The article has been useful in research about the role of public relations in government. However, it is lacking in detail and only gives a general background to the topic.
