“The legal victory is no doubt a triumph, not only for us in the Peoples Democratic Party but indeed, for democracy in Nasarawa State.
My administration will not tolerate any acts of, threat to peaceful co-existence and reckless disregard for rule of law by anybody or any community”. These were the exact words of Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, Executive Governor of Nasarawa state. He was addressing the people of the state after Nasarawa State Governorship and Legislative Houses election Tribunal had upheld his election.
It was a lengthy legal battle in which a fronsic and finger print expert was invited from the United Kingdom by the opposition All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) to prove his case.
For most of us who know Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, know he is not only a perfect gentleman but a true political player. Alhaji Aliyu Doma accepts politics as that of service and has never shown enmity to opponents for loosing election. He is so godly to accept whatever comes his way as God made and for that he has no room for hatred.
I vividly remember two weeks after he lost 1999 Governorship election to Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu. It was at event at Sheraton Hotel. I sat by his side and probably uncomfortable as what to say to him having known that he had just lost an election. But to my surprise he was his normal self as if nothing had happened. Soon after the April 14, 2007 election there seemed an attempt to smear his reputation through sponsored newspaper write ups but, such were completely ignored, only for the same self felt afflicted now turned to an attempted assassination, when a bomb was planted in the Government House on the day he was to move in. This act was definitely un-northern and indeed un-Nigerian. He did not allow this unfortunate act to affect his already welcome style of government and continuous support and the strong backing of the Nasarawa people for his policies.
There is no doubt that the emergence of Aliyu Doma is a new dawn to the Nasarawa people. Having known Aliyu Akwe Doma for many years, I can say without any contradiction that, he is a blessing to the Nasarawa people. Infact, I need not say this as they have proved they know him better than me by massively voting for him to emerge as their governor.
As I said earlier, he has forgotten the unfortunate act which will not deter him to continue to governor with equity and fair play. He continues to pursue goals for the growth and development of the state.
One thing I can say of him is that, he will not give false promise, he will not lie and indeed will not be deceived. This is his nature. It is quite note worthy that Governor Aliyu Doma within the past eleven months has greatly shown that he is ready for the task before him to discharge his duty with sincerely of purpose and commitment.
I have no iota of doubt that with Aliyu Akwe Doma on the seat, Nasarawa state will achieve so much in the first four years of his administration as has not been witnessed since the creation of state. For the Nasarawa state citizens, his administration no doubt has brought a new relief. Despite this new opportunity, some people who have fed on the misfortune of the state had wanted to continue as usual. But Akwe Doma was not ready for such misfortune to continue.
Gov. Akwe Doma is making socio-economic life more bearable than it has been since the late General Sani Abacha created the state, both under Military and Civilian administrations.
In less than 12 month as the State Chief Executive Aliyu Akwe Doma has brought a new political innovation that should shut the mouths of his opponents. According to Mr. Muhammed Ohitoto, his Chief Press Secretary, Governor Akwe Doma undertook thank you visits to all senatorial districts of his state. But unlike before, it was not cultural dances that were made to entertain the people, but flagging of building of roads projects. These roads have been something the people have waited for a long time.
Before then Nasarawa state was dubbed one street state. Infact, the main city road which connect Nasarawa with Benue State has been completed or about to be completed. The governor knows the value of roads in the economic development of rural areas, where the people being basically farmers need good roads to convey their farm products to the markets.
What is happening in Nasarawa state is not a surprise to us. For most of us know Alhaji Aliyu Doma could not explain our happiness when he formally decleared his intention to contest for the number one position in Nasarawa state in 2007. We know him as a perfect gentleman, the type of person. He is Nigeria needs, he is one of the few politicians who do not see politics as a do or die affair but a means to deliver service to his people.
The way he cleared the PDP primaries and became the state flagg bearer without any complain, petition or dispute itself is a pointer to many good things about him.
Akwe Doma remains a man who by dint of hardwork, dedication and service is the type who cannot be intimidated. Aliyu Doma is a grassroots politician with a high towering profile as a competent leader, who not only understand the ordinary people but is committed to solving problems afflicting them.
He is truly and definitely a servant leader. He will indeed transform Nasarawa better than anyone before him. Nasarawa state citizens will witness and indeed have been witnessing a government that is business-like, and result-oriented that will lead to faster pace of development in the state.
