Being Text Of The Speech By His Excellency, Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, Oon (Garkuwan Doma), Executive Governor, Nasarawa State On The Occasion Of The Swearing-In Ceremony Of Newly Appointed Grand Khadi, High Court Judges And A Judge Of The Customary Court Of Appeal, Lafia, Monday, 9th June, 2008.
PROTOCOL:
I am pleased to welcome you to this historic occasion of the swearing-in ceremony of the Grand Khadi of the Nasarawa State Sharia Court of Appeal, three Judges of the High Court and a Judge of the Customary Court of Appeal. These appointments have been approved by me pursuant to the recommendations of the National Judicial Council.
2. We welcome the appointments of Your Lordships in the light of your enormous contributions to the administration of justice. By joining your learned colleagues on the bench today, we believe that your wealth of experience, integrity and impartiality will add impetus to this Administration's commitment to the entrenchment of democracy through the rule of law.
3. This Administration believes that to achieve the objectives of an efficient judicial system, the need for sufficient and well motivated judges and indeed the enabling environment are inevitable.
4. Accordingly, Government is committed to the provision of necessary infrastructures and facilities in our courts to sustain efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of justice.
5. Ladies and gentlemen, our determination to strengthen the judicial arm of Government necessitated our request for more judges. I need therefore to express our gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and members of the National Judicial Council, for the expeditious response to our request in this direction.
6. At this juncture, I wish to assure that we are determined to enhance the general welfare of our judicial officers. To this end, this Administration has approved the renovation of existing court buildings and residential accommodation for judges. Plans have also been concluded for the construction of more court buildings in the State before the end of the year. In the same vein, we have settled all outstanding allowances for Magistrates, Inspectors and Judges in the State. This Administration has also facilitated the establishment of a Federal High Court in Lafia which is soon to take off.
7. Similarly, in the area of human capacity building, Government has continued to support the training and retraining of judicial officers, within and outside the country.
8. While I congratulate Your Lordships for your well-deserved appointments, let me also remind you once more that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man. I therefore, urge Your Lordships to carry out your assignments with the highest sense of responsibility, integrity and professionalism. You must at all times endeavour to dispense justice expeditiously, as justice delayed is justice denied.
9. I would like to conclude this address by appealing to the general public to give maximum cooperation to our new Judges to enable them succeed in the discharge of their duties. I want to assure that Government is alive to its responsibility in the protection of lives and property of all citizens. In this connection, no one is above the law and no one shall be allowed to take the law into his or her hands.
10. On this note, I once more congratulate the newly appointed judicial officers and wish them God's guidance at all times.
11. Thank you and God bless
