The Nasarawa state branch of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employers (NULGE) has called on Nasarawa state government to revert to the unified local government service in the state.
President of the union, Comrade Adamu Eladoga who made the call in a speech marking May Day Celebration and the occasion of his two years in office stressed that “due to the abolition of the unified local government service in the state, there is concentration of qualified manpower in some local government” with some lacking competent hands.
According to him, the present system has given room for insurbodination among the staff as the local government has been turned intot that of kith and kin.
Comrade Eladoga further appealed to the state government to facilitate conduct of the local government election without much delay as according to him, “failure to conduct the election is a deliberate attempt to deny grassroot people the dividends of democracy”.
He also said NULGE as a union, frowns a the merger of local government staff pension board with the state pension board and noted that NULGE was going to do everything possible to ensure a de-merger.
Giving the account of his stewardship, Comrade Eladoga said NULGE under his leadership had facilitated both the building of a state secretariat for the union and the release of promotion letters to deserving staffs.
Comrade Eladoga who is also the secretary of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, assured that workers’ welfare would be the focus of his administration.
He said the union would not relent in its efforts to ensure that the state government endorsed and implement the new service scheme for local government workers.
The unionist however, challenged NULGE members and indeed, all workers to improve in the area of service delivery. “It is only by improving in service delivery that the rural people will reap the dividends of democracy”, he said.
Meanwhile, some members of NULGE have expressed confidence on the leadership of Comrade Eladoga. Speaking to Nigerian Newsday, a cross section of the union’s members said the administration of Comrade Eladoga deserved commendation for its resolution in championing the cause of members.
