
Celebrations of the 2008 workers day have taken place in Lafia, the Nasarawa State Capital.
Speaking during the occasion, Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma assured the Nasarawa State workforce that his Administration will leave no stone unturned in its determination to improve the living standard of the people.
He said the Administration was cognizant of the crucial role of the civil service in the delivery of service, a situation that led to the reorganisation of the service. The Governor said he was happy to note that the reorganization had led to a more compact and manageable service able to meet the expectations of the people.
Governor Doma used the opportunity to restate the Administration’s resolve to ensure that the civil service was adequately motivated to perform its statutory role as the engine house for policy initiation and implementation.
Some of the incentives the Governor mention was the implementation of the 15% salary increase for all the workers as well as the implementation of consolidated salary structures for tertiary institutions.
During the occasion, Governor Aliyu Doma commissioned the distribution of 5000 motorcycles to civil servants on hire purchase basis.
The International Workers day is celeberated every May 1st in commemoration of thr 1886 proclamation by the American Federation of Organised Trades and Labour Unions which declared that eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886.
